The fiber optic connector consists of a fiber optic cable and a plug at both ends of the fiber optic cable, which is composed of a pin and a peripheral locking structure. According to different locking mechanisms, fiber optic connectors can be divided into FC type, SC type, LC type, ST type, E2000 type,MU type,FDDI type, MTRJ type and MPO/MTP type etc. according to its polishing method, a fiber optic connector can be in APC or UPC. It also can be in simplex or duplex in accordance with the fiber counts. For a fiber optic connector, it can be connected for both single mode and multi mode fiber. Generally, yellow sheath color is for single-mode fiber and that of multimode fiber is tangerine.
The FC connector adopts a threaded locking mechanism, which is one of the earliest and most commonly used fiber optic movable connectors.
SC type is a rectangular connector developed by NTT, which does not require threaded connections and can be directly inserted and pulled out. Compared with FC connectors, it has smaller operating space and is convenient to use.
LC is a Mini type SC connector developed by LUCENT, which has a smaller volume and is widely used in systems. It is a direction for the development of future fiber optic active connectors.
The ST connector was developed by AT&T company and uses a bayonet locking mechanism. Its main parameter specifications are similar to those of FC and SC connectors, but it is not widely used in the company. It is usually used for multimode device connections and is more commonly used when docking with other manufacturers’ equipment.
The pins of MTRJ are made of plastic and positioned through steel pins. As the number of plugs and withdrawals increases, various mating surfaces will wear and tear, and their long-term stability is not as good as ceramic pin connectors.
The MU (Minimum Unit Coupling) type connector is the world’s smallest single core fiber optic connector developed by NTT, based on the most commonly used SC type connector. The connector used a 1.25mm diameter sleeve and a self retaining mechanism, which has the advantage of achieving high-density installation.
MPO/MTP is a new type of fiber optic connector, which is of multi-core fiber optic connector adopted by IEEE standards for 40G/100G transmission . It is mainly used in three major fields: applications in high-density environments of data centers, applications from fiber optic cables to buildings, and connection applications in some optical transceiver devices such as PLC splitters, 40G or 100G SFP modules, and QSFP+ etc.
How to choose a high quality fiber optic connector for your telecommunication projects or your data centers, the following performance, you need to consider.
Optical performance is the first thing need to take into account.
