What is a Dead Break Elbow

Here refers to a cable connector, which is used to bridge AEIC or ICEA standard power cable in a  stranded, compressed or compacted conductor to a pad mounted transformer,a switchboard or some other electrical equipment with bushings.

T-shaped dead break elbow is bolted onto a bushing insert through screwing a stud into the threads pre-assembled inside of the bushing insert. this means you can not pull it off freely to break the load and you have to unscrew the bolt & remove the T-body connector.

Except this dead break elbow, PowerTel is able to provide you other cable accessories, like load bread elbow, bushing inserts, stand-off bushings, load break junctions, elbow surge arrester a complete product chain to connect your pad mounted transformers properly, safely and reliably.

Dead Break Elbow Classified by Amperage Rating

In terms of Amperage rating, it is 600A & 900A.

Load Break Elbow VS Dead Break Elbow

load break elbow
dead break elbow

To be simply, when current flow in a power system less than 200 Amperage, a load break elbow can be used, while any power system over 200 or more amperage, a dead break elbow considered to be used.

One more important thing , In a radial feed system, people always have a right rating selection of this load break elbow connector and its associated bushing insert. however, in a loop feed system, people sometimes choose a wrong size of this dead break elbow to fit the bushing insert. The reason is that, in the first transformer in a loop feed system, it is requiring to carry all amperage in downstream transformers. At this situation, you have to choose a 600A or 900A rated dead break elbow & its appropriate bushing insert to support all current in the loop, based on the quantity of transformers in the loop.

Steps to install a 600 Amp dead break elbow

  1. Preparation some necessary tools, such as a power cable cutting & stripping tool, a cable lug crimp, a power drill, a torque wrench, a cable brush, and a ruler & maker etc.
  2. Mark the pole cable in a right position to ensure a seamless connection and remove the cable outer sheath accordingly.
  3. Pull back the copper neutral wires and fix these wires on the cable properly by using some electrical tapes.
  4. Remove power cable insulation and its shield layer to expose the cable conductor in a suitable length to install the cable lug.
  5. Remove the shield layer of cable insulation in an appropriate length to install a cable adapter; in this step, assuring to have a perfect square cut to avoid any potential damage to cable insulation layer.
  6. Compress the cable lug to have a full contact with the cable conductor; this step is extremely important, because if not compressed completely, it will potentially cause some heat after the energize the transformer.
  7. Put the T-body connector onto the finished cable lug and cable adapter in a correct direction and connect neutral wire to T-body connector
  8. Finally, install the finished cable connector onto the bushing insert on a pad mounted transformer or a switchboard.
