What is a Submarine Cable

It is one type of special cables buried into rivers, lakes,seas and the oceans, used to transmit telecommunication signals or power energy. It can be divided into submarine fiber optic cable, Submarine power cable and submarine power cable composite with optical fibers, for dual functions. Our plant is well equipped with two Voltage Controlled Voltage (VCV) lines, which are capable of handling cables up to 500kV, and two Constant Controlled Voltage (CCV) lines for cables up to 220kV. All the machinery is suitable for triple extrusion of XLPE with a dry cooling system, as well as a degassing system. Configuration of a submarine cable

The cables are designed to withstand the harsh underwater conditions. It typically has several layers, including:

  •  Inner Core: Made of an optical unit housing 12 to hundreds of optical fibers that transmit data using light signalsor made of aluminum or copper conductor for power transmission or for both application in a single cable.
  •  Insulation: To protect water penetrate into the optical unit to damage the fibers or the conductors, which potentially cause a short circuit.

Armor: this is also a very important layer for a submarine cable. Normally, it is  made of a steel tape, lead, or steel wire to strengthen the cable for some potential attacks in the water, to protect the cable against abrasion, anchoring, and other external threats.

  •  Outer Sheath: A protective layer, a double protection for the cable.

What types of submarine cables are there

 

For Submarine fiber optic cable, it has two main categories with or without a repeater system in a cable structure with non-armor, single armor and double armoring layers, which need to take considerations into local geological,hydro-logical and meteorological conditions when design the cable.

For Submarine power cables, Commonly, it has three main types as well, Alternative current submarine power cable,which is more common and buried a lot around the world, due to his lower cost, easy to make and easy to do maintenance work ; the other one is DC submarine cable, which has a lower loss and suitable for long distance power transmission, preferred by some oil & gas companies and some electrical utilities, and it is very expensive.

Composite Submarine cable, it consist of some optical fibers for telecommunication and aluminum or copper conductors for power transmission.

Testing and acceptance of submarine cables
After the submarine cable is laid and buried, the testing and acceptance work should be carried out in strict accordance with the requirements of the construction quality control plan. The inspection items include cable resistance, insulation resistance, sheath continuity, and grounding resistance. If the test results are qualified, the cable is accepted and put into normal operation.
